HCC Forestry Club Attends Regional Convention
Representatives of the Haywood Community College Forestry Club recently attended the annual regional convention of the Society of American Foresters. The convention, held in Roanoke, Virginia, attracted a crowd of over 400 people.
According to John Palmer, Forestry Club faculty advisor, HCC students made a lasting impression on conference attendees with a custom made exhibit featuring HCC’s associate programs in Fish and Wildlife Management, Forest Management Technology, and Wood Products Technology. The exhibit featured Appalachian native plants and wildlife. The background panels were made of a variety of finished paneling strips that were produced by HCC’s Wood Products students.
Students attended lectures and information sessions about current forestry issues, resume writing, and job interviewing. On the trip home, the students also visited the forestry department of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This educational excursion was made possible by a private donation and by Forestry Club funds raised by the sales of firewood, Christmas trees and wreaths.
