HCC OFFERS CLASS IN ORGANIC GARDENING
Haywood Community College will offer a class in Organic Gardening beginning in March. The initial class meeting will be Friday evening, May 10 from 5–7p.m. Beginning on Saturday, March 11, the class will meet on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m.–noon for eight weeks. Mary Hiers a thirteen year professional in the Horticulture field will be the instructor.
According to Hiers, a growing concern for the environment and for personal health has led many consumers to demand healthier foods with less chemical inputs. Small farmers should see the demand for organically grown produce rise as consumers become more knowledgeable of the benefits. This class will teach the skills necessary to start a successful organic garden.
Topics covered during the course will include renewable resources, permaculture, integrated pest management, composting, producing organically-grown vegetable transplants, soil health and soil preparation, and finding and developing a market. Students will also participate in instructor-led field trips.
Registration for HCC’s second-eight week session is March 7 from noon – 5:30 p.m. For additional information about this course or the HCC Horticulture Technology program of study, contact HCC Student Services at 828-627-4500.
