HCC Open House Attracts Students from Far and Near
Students came from as far east as Beaufort, N. C. and from as far west as Hayesville, N.C. to attend Haywood Community College’s first open house. Visitors had the opportunity to see first-hand what HCC has to offer as they met with faculty representatives, attended a selection of mini- sessions, and toured the campus.
Andrew Thompson of Roxboro drove from Raleigh to learn more about the Forestry and Wood Products programs. "I want to join my family’s lumber and timber business. HCC’s programs seem to be much more geared toward what I need, than the courses I am currently taking at N.C. State University," he said.
Nina Fox-Holloday, from Asheville just sold a business and is looking for a second career. She was interested in the Horticulture program. "I know several people who have went through the HCC program and I have heard wonderful things about it,"she said.
Catherine Brake filled out an application for admission before she and her family went back to the coast. Brake wants to enroll in the Professional Crafts: Jewelry program. She will begin general education courses spring semester. The move to the mountains will be not only the start of a new career, but also a lifestyle change for the young woman from Beaufort, who has lived for the past twenty years on a sailboat with her family. How did she know about HCC? The Internet. "I have always enjoyed making jewelry. I looked up gemology on the Internet and HCC was one of the links—I immediately knew I wanted to learn more about the college,"she said. "This Open House was at just the right time."
HCC alumni Rick Ivester toured the campus with his son Jason. Rick said that he graduated from HTI in 1969 with a degree in business. Jason was interested in the college transfer program.
Plans are to make the Open House a bi-annual event. The next one should take place in March or April. If you would like to arrange a campus tour before then, please call Student Services at (828) 627-4646.
