FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HCC TO HOST WOODSMEN’S MEET
The air will be filled with the sound of chain saws and the ringing of axes when six timber sports teams meet at Haywood Community College for the 2002 Mid-Atlantic States Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13. The public is invited to attend.
The contest kicks off with a quiz bowl contest on Friday night held in the HCC Student Center Auditorium. The quiz bowl is a knowledge-based contest which allows participating teams to score points by answering a battery of forestry related questions.
Saturday events begin at 8 a.m. at the softball and volleyball fields located on HCC’s main campus. Students will compete in the following events: dendrology, archery, team log roll, pulpwood toss for distance, pulpwood toss for accuracy, water boil, pole climb, axe throw, pole fell, cross cut saw events, horizontal speed chop, bolt split, chain saw events, bow saw events, and team tug-of-war. HCC students have placed high in many of these competitions in the past and will be defending first place titles in many of the events.
HCC team members will compete with teams from Allegany College of Maryland, Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Montgomery Community College, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and Pennsylvania State Mont Alto.
Refreshments will be available for purchase on campus for guests. For additional information about the event, please call the HCC Natural Resources Division at 627-4561.
