Conversations Exhibition Opens at Grovewood Gallery
"Conservations", a collabortative exhibtion with Journel Thomas and eighteen of his artistic friends, will open at the Grovewood Gallery in Asheville on August 2. Thomas, known for his bowls turned from native woods, is the brainchild behind the exhibition. Artists, most of them Haywood Community College Professional Crafts Department faculty and alumni, will incorporate one or more of Thomas’ bowls in their creative works. The artists work in a variety of media including wood, fiber, clay and metal.
"Conversations," the theme of the exhibition, originated from the dialogues between Thomas and the individual artists. He provided a turned object for each artist with which to experiment, and after much interchange of ideas, Thomas turned a final piece for the artist to finish. The pieces in the exhibition reflect the individuality of every artist and his or her media, ranging from the whimsical to the practical, employing various techniques such as surface dyeing, texturing, piercing and carving.
"Conversations" can be viewed at the Grovewood Gallery in Asheville until September 30. An opening reception will be at the Grovewood on Friday, August 2
from 6 to 8 p.m.. For more information, call the Grovewood Gallery at (828) 253-7651, ore-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
