HCC Public Information Office Wins Three National Marketing Awards
The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations awarded Haywood Community College with a Paragon Award in three different categories of competition. The college was awarded a Gold Paragon in the category, Promotion Campaign for a Special Event; a Silver Paragon in the category, Print Advertisment, Single; and a Bronze Paragon for the college Viewbook. The awards were recently announced at the national conference held in Las Vegas. The Paragon Awards is an annual competition that recognizes excellence in communication exclusively for two-year colleges. This year, the competition included more than 1,750 entries from community colleges all over the nation.
All three entries were designed, written and edited by Debra Davis, HCC Coordinator of Marketing and Public Information. The gold winning entry, "Touching Life," was developed for the HCC Foundation’s 2002 Annual Fund Drive. The Annual Fund Drive package consisted of several pieces—a brochure, an eight-page newspaper tabloid, letterhead, envelope, two specialty invitations, thematic presentation folders, thank-you note cards, and a t-shirt. The campaign materials focused on the impact HCC graduates have in our community and region. Drawing on the quote—"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give," by Sir Winston Churchill, Davis highlighted several successful HCC graduates and the way they are contributing to the quality of life in Haywood County.
The silver award winning entry in the Print Ad, Single category was a full-page advertisement that was developed by Davis to run in a special World War II commemorative tabloid published by The Enterprise Mountaineer. The ad, using an historical photograph, focused on the triumph of the returning soldiers and the part that the GI Bill played in educating thousands of veterans.
The bronze award winning entry was HCC’s Viewbook. The 24-page booklet, Explore, Discover, Know, is an overview of the college and its programs. Used by student recruiters, it is the central piece of the recruitment materials package.
HCC has won Paragon Awards twice in the past 4 years—in 2001, a gold award, and in 2000 a bronze.
