HCC’S STAGE MAKEUP CLASS TRANSFORMS ORDINARY PEOPLE INTO EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTERS
Haywood Community College will offer the stage makeup class as a day, evening or internet course for fall semester. The class was first introduced in 1997. It is designed to give creative students a unique medium as an artistic outlet with additional avenues to explore and more job opportunities. It introduces techniques for applying prosthetics, facial hair, and wigs. Students learn how theatrical lights affect makeup, how to apply makeup to create a certain mood, and how to achieve the look of a specific style period.
For the mid-term, students must compose a blueprint of a character, fictional or real, and how they plan to transform someone into this character. Through research, students must summarize the transformation from head to toe, including sketches and drawings. For their final project, students must use all the techniques they have learned throughout the semester to apply makeup, style hair and costume the character from their mid-term blueprint.
For on-campus classes, airbrushing will be introduced this year to the stage makeup classes. Airbrushing is a technique of applying makeup that allows the artist to distribute the cosmetics more evenly. It is a time and cost saving application that gives the artist more freedom for body art. The introduction of the airbrushing technique is a way to better equip students in cutting edge practices.
At the helm of the stage makeup class is Cosmetology Coordinator Deborah Ball. Ball brings 23 years combined experience in film and theater to her classroom. She has worked with Paramount, Fox, and Bungalow and is a consultant for Blue Ridge Motion Pictures. Ball says, "With a major studio less than 30 minutes away, I can see why this class has been and continues to be a beneficial asset to HCC and its students."
