HCC TO OFFER NATURE HIKING CLASS FALL SEMESTER
Haywood Community College will offer a Nature Hiking class fall semester. This class will offer students the opportunity to see nature up close as they learn more about the mountains during day long hikes in the back country guided by John Palmer. Seven hikes are planned and four are required for the course. Trips will range from four to eight miles and participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, cameras, and sturdy walking shoes. Travel will be provided in college vans and will depart from the main campus at either 8 or 9 a.m. and return by 5 p.m.
Choose from the following hikes: Hazel Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest; Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; The Big Rock on Haynes Top, Wesleys Creek; Forest Festival Day at the Cradle of Forestry; Max Patch; or Crabtree Bald.
Students must also attend lectures on Thursday, August 21 and Thursday, August 28 from 6 to 7:50 p.m.
Although emphasis is on actual hiking, the class will also focus on identifying native trees and plants. Fun, knowledge, exercise, and relaxation—the perfect combination!
Fall registration is Wednesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 14 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. For more information on the Nature Hiking class, the registration process, or any of HCC’s programs of study, please call Student Services at 627-4500.
