FERGUSON ELECTED HCC BOARD CHAIRMAN

James M. Ferguson was elected Chairman of the Board at the February meeting of the Haywood Community College Board of Trustees.



Ferguson has served on the HCC Board for more than 18 years and served as chairman of the building and grounds committee and vice-chairman of the board.



Ferguson is a lifetime farmer from the Fines Creek Community and is owner of Ferguson Farms, Ferguson Supply and Ferguson’s Trout Pond. He is also co-owner of F&F Trucking.



Over the years, Ferguson’s dedication to soil and water conservation principles has led him to provide leadership on the local, state and national level. Currently he serves as a Haywood County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor—a position he has held for the past 34 years. He has served for the past 23 years on the Southwestern NC Resource Conservation and Development council. In 1993, North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. appointed Ferguson chairman of the NC Soil and Water Commission and he currently serves as chairman of the organization by appointment of Governor Michael Easley.



Ferguson has been recognized for his contributions with several awards including the "Long Leaf Pine" awarded by NC Governor Hunt in 1984 and "Outstanding Layman" awarded by the NC Chapter of Soil and Water Conservation Society in 1996. Most recently he was named the "2004 National Conservation District Board Member of the Year" by the National Conservation District Employees Association.



He has served on many local boards including the Pigeon River Fund Board, Haywood County Farmland Preservation Board, Haywood County Board of Education, NC. Beef Cattle Association Board of Directors, NC Tomato Growers Association, NC State Horticulture Council and Community Board, and the NC Tobacco Growers Association Board of Directors



Ferguson is also a member of the Fines Creek Community Association.
