HCC ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM GRADUATE OPENS ROSS GRADING & EXCAVATING

For Phillip Ross, a graduate of the Haywood Community College REAL Enterprises program and current student in the Business Administration program, deciding to open a business was a family decision. Ross’s family has worked together for several decades on a dairy farm. But according to Ross, the dairy business in this area is limited to the number of cows you can milk.

For this reason and others, Ross, along with his father, Steve, and uncle, Dan, opened a new business called Ross Grading & Excavating. The business is a complete grading and excavating service he researched and planned through the REAL Enterprises program.

The REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning) program explores the key issues necessary to successfully start and operate a profitable business.

"The REAL class helped me learn the structure of a business," Ross explains. "It covers from start to finish how to open a business and the ups and downs."

Ross Grading & Excavating opened in February and has not slowed down since. The business is located at 151 Bob Boyd Road in the Jonathan Creek area of Waynesville, NC.

"This type of business is something we’ve always wanted to do," Ross says. "We felt like a grading and excavating service was a good niche with all the building that’s happening in the area."

Ross says growing up on a dairy farm, he’s always enjoyed working for himself and being his own boss, so opening a business suits him well.

"The accounting classes at HCC are beneficial to me because I will handle most of the book work of the business," Ross says. "I also learned how important advertising is. If people don’t know you’re out there, they won’t hire you."

Ross says he chose HCC because he wanted to stay home and remain active in his family’s business. His younger brother, Mark also helps out in the dairy business. "The whole family is working together to make both businesses work," Phillip Ross says.

The REAL program at HCC is operated with the assistance of NC REAL Enterprises, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote small business creation and experiential entrepreneurship education through partnerships with high schools, post-secondary institutions, and community-based organizations in rural areas of NC. REAL provides curriculum materials, professional development for REAL instructors, and technical assistance to students enrolled in the program.
