HCC PROFESSIONAL CRAFTS STUDENTS TO HOLD GRADUATE EXHIBIT
The graduating class of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts department will exhibit their best work at the Grovewood Gallery from April 23 through May 14. The juried exhibit of sculptural, utilitarian, and decorative objects in textiles, metals, wood, and clay opens Friday, April 23. A reception will be held on Friday from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the gallery located beside the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina at 111 Grovewood Road. Hours for the Grovewood Gallery are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
This exhibit marks the professional debut for many exhibiting craftspeople. It will feature work from 13 graduating HCC students in weaving, jewelry, pottery, and woodworking. Most of the exhibition pieces are for sale. The college makes involvement in the installation, organization, and publicity of this exhibit part of the coursework for HCC professional crafts students. Catharine Ellis, HCC fiber instructor, says, "For some of our students, this exhibit is their first chance to show their best work on a professional level. The students have been working diligently to get ready for this show."
The HCC Professional Crafts Program, now in its 27th year, is a two-year commitment, focusing on all aspects of becoming an independent craft professional. In addition to sharpening their technical and artistic skill in their chosen medium, students also create a marketable line of production work, plan a studio, and become familiar with the craft market. Mandatory coursework includes photography of finished pieces for gaining entrance into craft shows, creating a business plan, and designing and building a studio tailored to fit production needs.
