HCC REGIONAL MODEL CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER RECEIVES GRANT FROM JANIRVE FOUNDATION
Haywood Community College Foundation has been awarded a grant from the Janirve Foundation in the amount of $250,000 for the Regional Model Child Development Center. The center will be constructed on the HCC campus.
Irving Jacob and Jeannett Graham Reuter founded the Janirve Foundation in 1954. The foundation encourages new and innovative approaches dealing with a problem affecting a significant sector of society and improving the quality of life. Programs that benefit children and youth, the under-served, and that improve the well being of others are of particular interest.
According to HCC Foundation Executive Director Laura Leatherwood, construction may begin on the center this summer. "The grant from the Janirve Foundation will be a great help. This is the first capital campaign HCC has undertaken. We are striving toward raising $1 million from the community. The community has responded positively and we are 60 percent of the way toward reaching our goal. The HCC Regional Model Child Development Center also received two individual anonymous donations of $100,000 each."
The new Regional Model Child Development Center will offer evening and after school programs. The 20,300 square foot center will serve 163 children, including 24 much needed spaces for infants. The center will provide distance educational opportunities for childcare professionals across the county and region, as well as provide a model teaching facility for the training of childcare workers. It will also be a family resource for counseling and training in parenting and family issues.
