"GIVING-—IT’S IN OUR NATURE!" HCC ANNUAL FUND DRIVE KICKS OFF
The Haywood Community College foundation kicked off its Annual Fund Drive, "Giving—It’s In Our Nature!," on April 29. The theme is a reflection of the college-wide spirit of giving by HCC students and faculty and staff as well as the by the college’s many donors and friends. By sharing their time, talents and money to furthering the success of HCC students, contributors to the HCC Annual Fund Drive contribute the economic welfare of our region.
This spring, as the Foundation asks the people of Haywood County to show their support of HCC, the foundation asks people to not forget the impact HCC and its graduates have on our community. In the past 39 years, HCC has served over 182,000 students.
Foundation Board Director and Practice Administrator for Mountain Eye Associates, Bill Bird said, "HCC has a tremendous impact on local business. An investment in HCC provides an ongoing contribution to the quality of life for all of Haywood County’s citizens. The college provides business and industry with the trained workforce needed to make their organizations successful."
Members of the HCC Foundation will be asking for contributions from individuals and businesses to fund special programs, acquisitions, and scholarship programs for the college which will enhance the educational experiences of HCC students.
HCC Pottery Instructor, Gary Clontz said, "In my nearly thirty years of being a part of HCC, I have learned the meaning of giving and what one gets in return. Students come to HCC seeking a new beginning and place their trust in me to provide the necessary guidance and skills to achieve their goals. By giving, I have been richly rewarded as I have seen many graduates realize their dreams as they have opened their own studios and businesses."
This year’s Annual Fund Drive goal is $190,000. Through private donations, the HCC Foundation aids, strengthens and furthers the work and service of HCC. Funds collected during the annual drive are used for scholarships, to keep abreast of current technology, and to assist with college needs to ensure every HCC student receives a topnotch education.
According to the HCC Financial Aid Office, $151.000 was awarded in scholarships in 2003-2004 with the assistance of the Foundation to over 150 students. Scholarships are usually awarded based on financial need and academic abilities. Many scholarship recipients would be unable to continue their education without this assistance.
In the past year, Foundation funds have supported many programs for the college. The Foundation also awarded several mini-grants to faculty and students. With these funds, students and faculty were able to travel, conduct special studies, and gain real-life experience through college versus college competitions.
The Foundation conducts its Annual Fund Drive once a year but will accept gifts throughout the year. The HCC Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. All gifts are fully tax-deductible under federal and state tax laws.
