Johnson Named New President of Haywood Community College
The Haywood Community College Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Dr. Rose Harrell Johnson, as the new president of the college at its November meeting. The appointment is contingent upon the North Carolina Community College System’s final approval of the candidate. The State Board has already approved her as a viable candidate during HCC’s presidential search process.
Since 2004, Johnson has been the Vice-Chancellor of Workforce Development Services for the Virginia Community College System in Richmond, Virginia. Prior to that she held other positions within the North Carolina Community College System and at a South Carolina Community College.
Dr. Johnson served as Vice President of Corporate and Continuing Education at Forsyth Technical Community College from 1996–2004. While there, she also served as the Executive Director of the Triad Entrepreneurial Initiative. In that role, she developed a regional (12 county) partnership program sponsored by Winston-Salem Alliance and Action Greensboro as a five-year demonstration project. From 1994-1996, she served as Dean of Continuing Education at Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter, SC. She spent 4 years as Director of Focused Industrial Training at Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, NC. Dr. Johnson also spent 4 years at Mayland Community College where she served as the Director of Occupational Extension and the Small Business Center, the Mitchell County Continuing Education Director and a part-time JTPA Coordinator.
Prior to joining the community college system in 1986, Dr. Johnson was the Director of Marketing and Community Relations and Associate Director of the Foundation for Sloop Memorial Hospital in Crossnore, NC.
Dr. Johnson received an Ed.D. from North Carolina State University in Adult and Community College Education, an Ed.S. from Appalachian State University in Adult Education. She received a master’s from Appalachian State University and a bachelor’s degree from Mars Hill College.
HCC began the search for a new president in July when Dr. Nathan Hodges left to assume the position as President of Bowling Green Technical College in Lexington, KY.
A 13-member presidential search advisory committee consisting of community leaders, and representatives from the HCC staff, faculty and students evaluated 59 qualified applicants for the position. The committee chose six finalists that they submitted to the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees made the final selection.
Chairman of the HCC Board of Trustees Neal Ensley said, "Our Board interviewed all six finalists. Dr. Johnson’s sincere passion to use her leadership skills as a college president and her obvious interest in our community and love of this area, were what made her the outstanding person to become our new president."
With the approval of the NCCCS State Board, Dr. Johnson will assume her position as president of Haywood Community College on January 16, 2006.
