HCC to Offer Business Plan Workshop in Preparation

for Haywood Chamber's Business Plan Competition

The Small Business Center of Haywood Community College will offer a free seminar entitled "Business Plan Basics" on Tuesday, January 17, from 6-8 p.m. in the Student Center Building on the campus of Haywood Community College. This workshop is a timely offering as the Haywood Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Business Plan Competition with an award(s) made up to $10,000. Deadline for submission of your business plan is March 3, 2006. Application and contest rules can be accessed at www.sbc.haywood.edu. An important aspect of this competition is to encourage would-be business owners to plan in detail because many businesses fail due to lack of planning. You will be able to study the steps to actually writing your plan and learn how to cover what you really need in a short but useable plan. An effective business plan serves at least four goals:

"

It helps you focus your ideas

"

It creates a track for you to follow in the early stages of business growth

"

It creates benchmarks against which you can measure your progress

"

It provides a document for attracting equity or debt financing

This workshop will provide you with an interactive, hands-on, step-by-step primer to guide you through the process of creating an effective business plan. Learn what a good plan must include and discover how it can bring together goals, plans, strategies and resources for your business. Examine how a good business plan can minimize risk and save you from significant financial and professional losses resulting from an unprofitable business. The presenter is Tom Fleckenstein, business counselor with the Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at Western Carolina University. To preregister for this free seminar, call the Small Business Center at 627-4512.
