Haywood Community College student and Army reservist John Phoebus recently presented the college with a United States flag he received while serving in Iraq.

Phoebus spent one year in Iraq assigned to B-Company 401st Civil Affairs Battalion. The flag was flown in the face of the enemy and came under attack by mortar fire.

He was stationed at Forward Operation base Sykes in Tall`Afar, Iraq.

Phoebus has spent 34 years serving the Army, 15 years actively and 19 years in the Reserves.

Phoebus decided to change careers after serving as a police officer in Florida and Missouri. He has been completing requirements in the Computer Information technology program through distance learning classes.
