STIHL PRESENTS HCC WITH $1000 IN HONOR OF NATURAL RESOURCES STUDENT JAY BLACKBURN

Haywood Community College student Jay Blackburn joined competitors from over 40 schools to participate in the 2006 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Collegiate Series. The championship of Series was held in Stillwater, MN and broadcast on ESPN's college network.

Blackburn qualified as one of the top six logging sports athletes in the US and Canada, Finishing third overall. As a result, STIHL presented HCC a $1.000 check to the HCC Natural Resources Department.

For the first time in HCC's history, Blackburn was the overall winner of STIHL Chainsaw's Mid-Atlantic States Intercollegiate Woodsmen's Meet, which qualified him for the championship.

Blackburn participates in competitions for HCC three times annually. He also participates in the South Atlantic Woodsmen's Association (SAWA) where he was named Rookie of the Year last year.

"This is something I really enjoy," Blackburn said. "The key to this sport is technique, accuracy, and practice." He spends one to two hours per day practicing.

The Marion native will finish HCC in May 2007 and plans to continue his education at a four-year university.
