HCC Instructor Exhibits Work in Europe

Catharine Ellis, Haywood Community College Professional Crafts-Fiber instructor, has a textile piece traveling to several sites in Europe as part of an exhibit entitled the “International Lace Biennial.” The very prestigious lace show will be on exhibition in Belgium, Germany, and France during its one-year tour.

Ellis’ piece, “840 Steel Threads,” is included in an exhibit of twenty-four artistic works that were selected from approximately 150 entrants from around the world. The theme of the exhibition is contemporary interpretations of traditional lace in innovative and unique forms. The HCC instructor’s piece was the only one from North America selected for the exhibition.

Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of Belgium opened the Lace Biennial in Brussels. The Queen is a patron of the arts, both in Belgium and throughout Europe, and took a personal interest in the competition by awarding the Grand Prize to the winner of the competition, Erna van Sambeek of the Netherlands.

Ellis attended the opening of the exhibition at Tours and Taxis in Brussels, Belgium and made a presentation about her work to the Queen.
