HCC’s Volunteers Club Awarded Community Pride Award
Haywood Community College’s Volunteers Club was selected as one of four first place winners in the Commission for a Clean County’s 2006 Community Pride awards. These awards are given for successful efforts in the categories of litter pickup and control, recycling of waste, beautifying areas, and improving the local environment. Winners were chosen based on quality of work, quantity of work completed, consistency in good practices, and commitment of employees.
The Haywood Community College Volunteers Club was first recognized as an official organization in October, 2003. Formed by graduates Robert Edwards and Jay Moose, the mission of the Club is to make a positive difference to the community and environment by leading by example using “Leave No Trace ” as its motto. The club is the first school-sponsored club in eastern America with a direct link to the National Park Service and membership is open to all curriculum programs as well as any faculty, staff or community members.
During the past year, the Volunteers Club has worked on a variety of projects all stemming from the goal of being good stewards of the land and good neighbors in the community. Some of these projects include: the Big Sweep; cleaning Richland Creek; yard work for a disabled resident; landscape of a small garden at Central Elementary; and participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program.
During the summer, the club visited Pigeon Community Center and held a “Project Wild” seminar for the summer enrichment program. The class visited the HCC campus for lunch at the Millhouse and a tour of the wildlife labs.
The Volunteers Club also raised money for the Alzheimer Association’s Memory Walk and participated in the event. The Club helped expand recycling on campus to include cans, plastic bottles, and containers. The club is in the process of adopting a trail and campsite in the Cataloochee Valley.
Advisors for the Volunteers Club at HCC are Pete Kennedy and Jan Camp. For more information about the club or to get involved, please call 627-4580.
