Duke Endowment Presents HCC with $420,000 for the Center for Advancement of Children

June Smith, Executive Director of Region A Partnership for Children, recently presented Haywood Community College with a check in the amount of over $420,000 for the Center for the Advancement of Children. The check is an award from the Duke Endowment.

The Duke Endowment was established in 1924 by North Carolina industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke. It is one of the nation’s largest private foundations.

“It has been over six years since the concept of the idea for this center,” Smith said. “It’s great to finally see it come to fruition.”

The HCC Center for the Advancement of Children will offer evening and after school programs. The center will provide distance educational opportunities for childcare professionals across the county and region, as well as provide a model teaching facility for the training of childcare workers. It will also be a family resource for counseling and training in parenting and family issues.

Situated on the HCC campus, the center is designed to foster growth and creativity while drawing upon the beauty of its natural surroundings. The center will serve as a teaching laboratory for HCC’s Early Childhood Associate program. Parents and students will be able to interact and observe children in the classrooms.
