Handmade Medallion Presented to HCC President

During the 2007 Graduation Ceremony, Haywood Community College faculty and staff presented college president, Dr. Rose Johnson, with a handmade presidential medallion. Faculty and students used their talents to create this special work of art.

Metal from which the medallion is made came from the USS Asheville, a United States Navy submarine. The lanyard on which the medallion is suspended is woven of strong silk fiber. The box housing the medallion is crafted in walnut.

The medallion depicts birds soaring in the sky above a rugged mountain skyline. The piece represents the tenacity and spirit of the HCC faculty, staff, and students which lifts them to new heights of service and success. The presidential medallion is special for its symbolism and because it was made by college faculty and students.
