HCC Holds REAL Recognition Ceremony
Haywood Community College recently held a REAL (Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning) Recognition Ceremony where students showed their completed business plans. Students that participate in the REAL program range from various programs of study from horticulture to professional crafts.
HCC has been a leader in providing entrepreneurship training to its students in numerous programs for many years. Recently, an Entrepreneurship Initiative has been implemented to incorporate entrepreneurship in every technical degree major on campus.
Richard Fortner of Bryson City completed the Horticulture Program at HCC. His business, Fortner Landscape, has been in existence for seven years. He plans to expand the business from serving Swain and Jackson counties into Graham County.
“The business class really put the financial aspect into perspective,” Fortner explains. “I realized that it’s not the quantity of work produced but the quality that counts.”
For Julie Deeds, the REAL program provided her with the confidence she needs to open a skate park. She traveled to different parks and plans to open her business within the next year in Royston, Georgia. “This class made me realize I can do this. I can run a business,” she says.
