HCC Professional Crafts Students Hold Graduate Show
Top students of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts graduating class were recently honored for their outstanding work. Sherrie Neal and Sharon Gordon, from the weaving program received Awards of Excellence. These are the highest awards and were given for excellence in their entire body of work. Three Awards of Distinction were awarded. One was awarded to Katie Johnson for significant growth in both design and craft. Kevin Tuffo also received the award for significant growth in both design and craft, and John Shafer for the high quality in his entire body of work.
The HCC Professional Crafts graduate show continues to be on exhibit at the Grove Arcade Arts and Heritage Gallery through June 13. The juried exhibit contains sculptural, utilitarian, and decorative objects in textiles, metals, wood, and clay. The Grove Arcade Arts and Heritage Gallery is located in downtown Asheville, Suite 115, 1 Page Avenue on the O. Henry side of the building. Hours for the gallery are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.
This exhibit marks the professional debut for many exhibiting craftspeople. It will feature work from graduating HCC students in weaving, jewelry, pottery, and woodworking. Most of the exhibition pieces are for sale. The college makes involvement in the installation, organization, and publicity of this exhibit part of the coursework for HCC professional crafts students. Catharine Ellis, HCC fiber instructor, says, “For some of our students, this exhibit is their first chance to show their best work on a professional level. The students have been working diligently to get ready for this show.”
