HCC Recognizes Tutor of the Year
Haywood Community College recently honored the Tutors and Tutee of the Year at an Honor’s Day ceremony. Students Rachel Brown and Zachary McTaggart contributed over 630 hours during the past year. Both were selected as Tutor of the Year. Tutee of the Year was HCC Pulp and Paper Technology student Judy Reeves. Over 35 student tutors, 13 faculty and staff tutors, and 4 volunteer tutors were also recognized at the Honor’s Day ceremony.
Rachel Brown graduated in May with a degree in Associate in Arts. She plans to continue her education at Western Carolina University to become a math teacher. Brown contributed 318 hours of tutoring during the last year. She tutors introductory computer classes and a wide range of math classes from basic math and elementary algebra to statistics.
Zachary McTaggart graduated in May from the Fish and Wildlife Management Technology program. He began working for the National Park Service in Alaska the week after graduation. McTaggart contributed 314 hours of tutoring during the last year. He tutors Wildlife Management, Forest Measurements, Silviculture, and math classes.
Tutee of the Year, Judy Reeves, returned to school after being laid off from Square D where she worked 34 years. “Judy exemplifies dedication and commitment to learning. She is a model for other students,” says Elaine Barnes, HCC’s Teaching and Learning Center Coordinator. “Her positive attitude is infectious as she offers encouragement to other students to stay on track and to be persistent with learning.”
HCC tutors provided over 3,000 hours of one-on-one instruction last year. The tutor program helps students understand coursework better while inspiring them to succeed and believe in themselves.
