The Haywood Community College Foundation recently received a $400,000 check from the Marjorie H. Kelly Trust for the Pop and Marj Kelly Endowed Scholarship Fund. Since its inception less than 10 years ago, 25 students have benefited from over $17,500 from this fund.

Marjorie Kelly passed away on March 15, 2007. She was a recipient of the "Women of Accomplishment" at Palm Beach Community College in 2000. The Kellys enjoyed a summer home in Waynesville. She established the scholarship as a memorial for her husband and an endowed gift from both of them that indicated their fondness for the people of Haywood County.

The scholarship is a way to assist students in meeting the financial burdens of attending college. In order to qualify, a student must have a real need for financial assistance and maintain a satisfactory academic record while enrolled.

"Planned gifts are a great way for people to help their families plan financially for the future, while also leaving a legacy in their community," explains Dr. Laura Leatherwood, HCC Director of Community & Economic Development. "There is no better way to improve people's quality of life than to provide them with a college education. This special gift from the Kellys will provide scholarships to students to attend Haywood Community College for as long as the college exists. The Kellys will be remembered for all the people they have helped in the past through their scholarship and all the people they will help in the future."

Contributing to the HCC Foundation is a way for the community to memorialize or honor special people while giving less fortunate persons the opportunity to gain an education and have a better life. Scholarships may be restricted by donors and can be either merit based or need based. A wide variety of opportunities are available ranging from an outright gift, living trust, or bequest in a will, to a charitable gift annuity, charitable lead trust, or many others.
