HCC Receives Superior Rating

In the 2005-2006 report on Accountability/Performance Measures and Standards, recently released by the North Carolina Community System, Haywood Community College received a superior rating—the highest rating awarded. To achieve a superior status, a college must meet a minimum of five of the six performance funding measures. The six measures are the progress of basic skills students, passing rates on licensure certification tests for first time test takers, goal completion of completers, employment of graduates and business/industry satisfaction with services provided.

According to HCC President, Dr. Rose Johnson, “The Superior Rating designation recognizes the outstanding quality of the college's programs and services and in turn, the college's talented and dedicated employees who made it possible. Best of all, it calls attention to the fact that HCC students excel in such things as attaining a professional license or certification and as university juniors (upon transfer). Students and their families can be assured that the college is one of high quality and integrity."

On six of six Performances Measures, HCC either met or had significant improvement. HCC met or had significant improvement on 11 of 12 Critical Success Factors.

One standard is how well HCC students perform in comparison to native students at the 4-year public universities across North Carolina. One hundred percent of HCC College Transfer students who completed their Associate in Arts Degree at HCC met the standard. Of UNC native students, 86.2% maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. One hundred percent of HCC's transfer students maintained a 2.0 or higher at the UNC university to which they transferred. Of HCC’s total number of students who either graduated HCC or transferred 24 or more credit hours, 87.9% maintained a 2.0 or higher GPA at the 4-year public university. Given the fact that HCC has an open door policy and the UNC system has very stringent admissions requirements, HCC students have performed very well. Only 28 other NC community colleges out of the 58 met the standard.

HCC graduates performed very well on the state licensing exams, with 91% pass rate on the first try in sitting for the exam. Only 23 of the 58 community colleges met this standard. The state average is 80% pass rate.
