HCC to Offer Basic American Sign Language Course
Haywood Community College will offer a Basic American Sign Language Course from August 9 through September 27 on Thursdays from 6 until 8 p.m. Cost is $60. Text used is called Basic Sign Communication and is designed by the National Institute for the Deaf. Minimum voice will be used during instruction.
Instructor for the course will be Kathryn Medford of Waynesville. Medford has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Western Carolina University. She worked at the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville and as a teacher’s assistant with the Exceptional Children’s program for the Haywood County School System. She has taught Basic American Sign Language at the university level at WCU and the Haywood County School System. Medford is a Level II Interpreter for the Deaf and recently received certification in Educational Interpreting. She is currently an interpreter for the Haywood County School System. Her goal is to become nationally certified under the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
