Two Haywood Community College Professional Crafts—Wood students brought home awards recently from the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta, Georgia. Austin Rhodes and Ken Tuell were both awarded first place for their pieces. Classmates, Jacque Allen and Patrick Huntwere also finalists.

Rhodes chair topped the seating category and Tuell won the Occasional category for his jewelry box.

Over 35 colleges and universities consisting of 200 participants entered this student furniture competition, with only three community colleges represented. HCC has won an award for the last 11 years in the fair. 

Design Emphasis is widely acclaimed as the foremost furniture design competition for students. It offers design students a unique opportunity to demonstrate their talent and originality before a judging panel of furniture industry designers, manufacturing and retail executives, and members of the trade press who have design-oriented backgrounds. It also provides a unique chance to experience an international industry trade show, make important career contacts and exchange ideas with other students from around the nation.
