Haywood Community College student Andrew Stewart of Stoneville, NC recently received a scholarship from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation. The Foundation established this two-year scholarship program to assist North Carolina Community College System students in achieving academic success.
The scholarship is awarded to students who best exemplify the SECU philosophy of “People Helping People,” and has demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference is given to students whose parents, guardians, or family members are public sector employees that live and work in North Carolina.
Stewart graduated from Dalton McMichael High School and is enrolled in the Forest Management Technology program. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Virginia Tech in Forest Management. After graduation from HCC, he would like to spend his summer fighting fires to gain job experience. Eventually, Stewart would like to work for either the North Carolina or United States Forest Service surveying tracks of timber or cruising timber under another procurement forester. He would like to work on the NC coastline for a few years and finally return to his hometown to work.
