Haywood Community College was recently approved to offer several areas of certification as part of the Jobs NOW “12 in 6” Project. The project is offered by the NC Department of Commerce, Division of Workforce Development and the North Carolina Community College System. It is funded under the Workforce Investment Act through funds made available by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.
These funds provide resources to HCC to support training in 12 occupational areas that can be completed under 6 months time. The training includes employability skills training and Career Readiness Certification. HCC will offer four programs as a Curriculum study and eight through the Continuing Education Division.
Certifications slated to begin in August include Automotive Systems, Building Construction Assisting, Early Childhood Teacher’s Aide, Electrical Assistant, Family Childcare Home Provider, Medical Office Administration, and Machining. Nursing Aide I and Phlebotomy Certification will begin in September.
Several others will begin in January 2010. Those include: Green Building, Horticulture, and Office Assistant.
These training programs were selected based on occupational projections reported by the Southwestern Workforce Development Board and are considered the fastest growing sectors from 2009 through 2018 for Haywood County and the region.
Partners for the Jobs NOW “12 in 6” Project include: the Southwestern Workforce Development Board, the NC Department of Commerce, the Haywood County Employment Security Commission/JobLink Center, HCC, Haywood County Economic Development Commission, and area industries.
