Haywood Community College Medical Assisting student Dori Woodard of Waynesville was one of six finalists for the region for the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. The award was created to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring former Governor Bob Scott. Governor Scott served as the state’s chief executive from 1968-1972 and then was president of the North Carolina Community College System for 12 years from 1983-1995. Governor Scott passed away in January of 2009.
Each community college can nominate one student for the award. Nominees should be active in campus activities and possess traits which will help them become leaders in their communities. As a finalist, Woodard was interviewed by a panel of community college Presidents.
Woodard was recognized at the North Carolina Community College Student Government Association’s Fall Conference held recently in New Bern, NC. For the honor, she was awarded $125.
In addition, HCC’s SGA officers attended the conference where they attended business meetings and workshops.
