Haywood Community College will offer a new community education certificate in Media Arts:  Photography. The course will begin November 11 and run through March, 14 2012. It will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The program requires basic knowledge of cameras and computers.

Does your camera have buttons and menus that you wish you knew how to use? Do you have a memory card full of images and you don’t know what to do next? The Media Arts Certificate in Photography offers hands-on instruction in basic camera operation, lighting, printing, editing, promotion, presentation and networking.

The focus of the photography course is on the creative process of concept to completion, while teaching the technical and creative aspects of the craft. Once students know the basics, they can concentrate on the creative. Students will use industry-standard software, Adobe Elements 10, to edit and enhance photographs. Through hands-on instruction, the photography program will enhance the skills of the individual as well as prepare them to be competitive in a media-rich job market. Upon completion of the certificate, participants will have a professional portfolio that can be presented in a print or a digital portfolio.  The program further explores the potential of social media as a means to market and communicate an individual’s expertise and professional work. This program will complement the college’s mission to the creative arts.

“The digital camera has become so inexpensive with so many features, that people want to learn how to use it creatively, instead of just in the program (automatic) mode. This program will teach that and more, so people can focus on their creativity instead of how to work the camera,” explains Lori Johnson, HCC Media Arts:  Photography instructor.

Johnson has been teaching photography courses for curriculum and community education for 10 years. She is a freelance photographer whose work has been shown throughout the U.S.  Johnson has a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Cost of the class is $240. For more information about the Media Arts Certificate in Photography, please contact Denise Thomason at 828-565-4242.
