Haywood Community College Medical Assisting student Beverly Yarborough was recently awarded the MaryNell DeWeese Scholarship from the Haywood County Chapter of Medical Assistants. The scholarship is awarded each year to a second year Medical Assisting student based upon character, professionalism, academic success, and financial need.

Yarborough is currently performing a clinical practicum at Western cardiology on Clyde. She has worked in the medical field for more than 20 years, 6 years in EMS. When she had back surgery, she could not lift patients anymore so she decided to return to school. Yarborough chose Medical Assisting because she enjoys the medical field, particularly the hands-on patient care.

“I enjoy helping people,” Yarborough explains. “There’s an excitement in using skills to help someone who’s sick.”

Yarborough came to HCC because it is local and the program is accredited. She enjoys the flexible schedule where students can take some classes online and the beautiful campus. “The instructors are friendly at HCC,” she says. “They go out of the way to help people.”

Yarborough also has a degree in Respiratory Therapy. She is currently a full-time medical technician at the Hermitage in Jackson County. In her spare time, she enjoys scrapbooking.
