Haywood Community College Nursing student Gracy Hughes is the recipient of the Ruby H. Haney Woodmen of the World Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is funded by the Woodmen of the World, now called Woodmen Life, in memory of Ruby Haney. Haney was a member of Woodmen of the World and retired from HCC in 1990 as nursing department head with more than 30 years of service.

According to Matt Wells, Woodmen Life financial representative, “The local Woodmen chapter votes to decide how to disburse money into the community to help improve the community and to help meet the needs of the members of the community. We believe education is the future for all of us. The future is only possible with education. That is why we award this scholarship.”

According to its website, Woodmen of the World was founded as a nonprofit fraternal organization and life insurance agent. It is governed by its member customers where the chapter system gives each member a voice in how to improve their respective communities.

Hughes, a Murphy resident, came to HCC for the LPN to RN Nursing Bridge program. She is already a LPN and works part-time in a family practice doctor’s office. She wanted to expand her level of skills by becoming a Registered Nurse.

“Growing up I wanted to be a teacher but knew that nursing is always in demand,” Hughes says. “I feel in love with patient care and enjoy the relationships you form with patients. I am ultimately teaching patients so I get the best of both worlds.”

Hughes says HCC’s Nursing program is consuming and challenging but also intriguing. “The program is very hands-on. The SIM Lab (Clinical Simulation Lab) fills in where clinicals have limitations on what students can do. It also throws curves at you so you have to think critically of what is the best direction to go. It is satisfying to put all the pieces together.”

Hughes was born in India but moved to the United States in second grade. She would like to work in med/surg at a hospital after graduating in May.
