Haywood Community College recently signed an Articulation Agreement with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro providing a path for HCC Honors Program graduates to earn full university honors from UNC-G’s Lloyd International Honors College. This partnership is the fourth such agreement between HCC’s Honors Program and similar programs at universities in the NC system. The other three colleges include Appalachian State University, UNC-Asheville, and Western Carolina University.
HCC’s Honors Program officially began in the 2012-13 academic year. The first graduate of the program finished in the spring of 2015. The first student to present an Honors Project at the NC Honors Association conference was in fall of 2015 in Asheville.
To enter the UNC-G Lloyd International Honors College, HCC Honors Program graduates must finish with a college transferrable degree such as an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree. The graduate must transfer a minimum of 12 hours of honors course credit with an A or B in each course and a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
The Honors Program at Haywood Community College is intended to provide an opportunity for qualified students to pursue a more rigorous and rich curriculum than is necessary to meet the standard graduation requirements as established by the college for each of its regular degree programs; challenge students in a way that promotes their personal and professional growth including enhanced development of HCC’s general education competencies: collaboration, critical thinking, and communication; and encourage incorporation of service learning into educational experiences.
Students wishing to enter the HCC Honors Program during their first semester at the college may do so if they are graduates of a NC high school college prep curriculum and meet one of four requirements: 1) high school GPA of 4.0 or higher (weighted), 2) high school class rank of 10% or higher, 3) An SAT score of 1875 or higher, or 4) An ACT score of 30 or higher.
Students wishing to enter the HCC Honors Program after their first semester must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least 12 college credit hours complete. Transfer credit will be considered when determining eligibility.
