Nina Cicman, Haywood Community College Pre-Nursing student, is passionate about working with the elderly. She recently finished the college’s Nurse Aide program as a first step to make her career dream a reality.
“I learn so much from the elderly,” Cicman explains. “I want to be there for them. I want to listen to them and help them.”
Cicman is taking a break from work right now after recently becoming a foster parent to two girls but when she worked at nursing homes and retirement centers, she enjoyed what she did. “I was sad to leave these elderly patients at the end of the day.”
Through HCC’s Nurse Aide course, students attend a mix of instruction and clinical hours taught by a registered nurse. The course prepares students to play a key role in keeping nurses up-to-date on vital information about the condition of patients. Nurse aides have extensive daily contact with patients as caregivers who help patients of all ages perform the most basic day-to-day tasks.
Originally from Peru, Cicman came to the United States at the age of 17 to live with her grandfather and attend school. She went to college in New York before moving to Haywood County to be close to her sisters.
“Everyone at HCC is so nice and helpful,” Cicman says. “I really enjoyed the clinical rotations of the nurse aide program where I was paired up with a Certified Nursing Assistant. I was able to learn from the CNA while helping her with her tasks.”
The next Nurse Aide courses at HCC will be both day and night classes beginning August 22 and ending December 5. The day classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Night classes will be on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Prerequisites for the course is a high school diploma, GED, or reading test results at ninth grade level or above.
