Haywood Community College recently recognized six full-time and one part-time instructor for Excellence in Teaching awards. Those recognized for full-time instruction include: Larry Davis – Health & Human Services, Craig Holloway – Business & Industry, Sarah McAvoy – Health & Human Services, Brian Schneider – Arts, Sciences & Natural Resources, Dr. Buddy Tignor, Arts, Sciences & Natural Resources and Steve Wampler – Business & Industry. Recognized for part-time instruction was Melody Chandler – Arts, Sciences & Natural Resources.
HCC program manager and instructor of Medical Office Administration Jodi Wijewickrama was recognized as Master Teacher. This award is a distinguished teaching award presented to the full-time curriculum faculty member who most exemplifies excellence in teaching by demonstrating excellent teaching, leadership, and service to the College and the community.
Selections begin with nominations from students and end with a professional portfolio review by a panel of the instructor’s peers. Recipients must demonstrate the following: entrepreneurial practices in the classroom; cooperative learning in the classroom; leadership and involvement in college clubs, student organizations and campus activities; involvement in professional associations, committee assignments and college-related work assignments above the normal requirement; effective teaching through student class evaluations; and involvement in the community.
