Students in Haywood Community College’s aquatic ecology class are eager to share their knowledge and experience with members of the community while partnering with Haywood Waterways Association for a West Fork Pigeon River snorkeling experience. The event will be held on Saturday, July 8.
This experience is an additional example of how HCC students learn even more outside the classroom.
According to Jonathan Triantis, 2017 forest management technology and 2016 fish and wildlife management technology graduate, “HCC offers many opportunities to volunteer with a lot of agencies. I got a lot out of the time I spent at the College.”
Participants in the snorkeling experience will learn about the diversity of fish and aquatic macro-invertebrate communities living in the river. This event is offered as part of Haywood Waterways “Get to Know Your Watershed” series. The organization works to maintain and improve Haywood County's waterways through education, public events and partnerships.
The snorkeling experience is free for members and a $5 donation for nonmembers. The group will meet at the Jukebox Junction Soda Shoppe at 12:30 p.m. on July 8. The event will conclude by 3:30 p.m. Snorkeling equipment and viewing boxes will be provided. Light refreshments will be provided by Haywood Waterways. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking space at the Jukebox Junction Soda Shoppe. Kids are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. Please leave pets at home.
Space is limited to 18 individuals. RSVP by 5:00 p.m. July 6 to Christine O’Brien at email@example.com or 828-476-4667.
