The Haywood Community College Lumberjack Team placed first in the 2017 John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet held at the Cradle of Forestry. HCC placed in 19 of the 22 total events.

“We have some extremely motivated students on the team this year including lots of brand new students to timbersports,” explains HCC forest management instructor Dr. James Jeuck. “With only six weeks of practice time, these students really did a great job.”

Prior to this event, the team competed in the 2017 Kentucky Wood Expo Conclave where they finished in second place, one point away from the first place winner. Team captain is student Brian Canaday. Trainer and coach is HCC graduate Ben Kniceley.

At the John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsmen’s Meet, the HCC team competed against 10 teams including several four-year schools. Those participating included Appalachian State University, Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Montgomery Community College, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Warren Wilson College, West Virginia University and Western Carolina University.
