Haywood Community College’s workforce continuing education department is offering a wide variety of courses for the month of March. There’s something for everyone, including courses that allow you to earn a credential to courses for the hobbyist.
Escort Vehicle Operator will be held March 10. Cost is $75. This course is designed to meet the training requirements set by the NC Department of Transportation to certify oversize-overweight load escort vehicle drivers.
Fused Glass Wind Chime will be held March 10, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Cost is $50. Create your own wind chime by arranging beautifully colored pieces of glass on a base of fusible glass.
Sustainable Cloth: Natural Dyes for Textile Artists will be held March 10 and 11, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cost is $186. Each student will leave the class with a set of samples and a working knowledge of how to incorporate sustainable color into their fiber art.
OSHA 10-Hour Certification will be held March 13 and 14, 4-9:00 p.m. Cost is $85. Successful participants will receive an official OSHA 10-hour course completion card.
Forging Kitchenware will be held Wednesdays March 14-April 18, 1-4:00 p.m. Cost is $220. Learn basic forging techniques while creating a variety of items including spatulas, ladles, frying pans, knives, choppers and more.
Forging Jewelry will be held Fridays March 16-April 20, 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost is $220. Participants will use traditional blacksmithing techniques to create iron jewelry.
Forging Tools for Woodworkers will be held Fridays March 16-April 20, 1-4:00 p.m. Cost is $220. This course will teach the basics of forging axes, adzes, drawknives and more.
Instrument Building (Tackhead Banjo & Dulcimer) will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, March 19-April 25, 5-9:00 p.m. Cost is $380. Students with a comfortable understanding of woodworking will learn all the skills necessary to design and construct a tackhead banjo or a dulcimer.
Build Your Own Loom will be held Tuesdays March 27-April 10, 1-5:00 p.m. Cost is $151. In this class, students will be introduced to several types of basic looms and build one that they can take home.
Dyeing to Quilt: Natural Dyes on Cotton will be held March 24 and 25, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Cost is $192. In this weekend intensive, each student will leave with a bundle of 20 hand-dyed fat quarters to use in their next quilting project.
Forklift Operator Certification will be held March 27 and 28, 5-9:00 p.m. Cost is $75. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will earn a forklift operator’s certificate.
In addition, HCC’s workforce continuing education department offers Community First Aid and CPR classes the third Tuesday of each month 6-10:00 p.m. HCC is Haywood County’s American Heart Association Training Center.
