Six Haywood County high school seniors were awarded the Pop and Marj Kelly Merit Scholarship at Haywood Community College. Bailey Henderson and Nicole Nelson of Pisgah High School and Daniel Ross and Ashleigh Young of Tuscola High School were each awarded $10,000 for two years. Holly Parton and MacKenzie Turner, both of Tuscola High School, were awarded $5,000 for two years.

This competitive scholarship requires applicants to submit an essay, as well as a list of their community and extracurricular school activities. In addition, recipients are required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Nelson plans to study criminal justice. “Growing up in a military environment, I have always had a passion for helping others in the community feel safe and secure,” she explains. “HCC has presented an opportunity for me to pursue my goal in the criminal justice field at a fraction of the cost I thought possible.”

For Turner, HCC will be the first step on her path to becoming an elementary education teacher. After obtaining an associate in arts degree at the College, she will transfer to Western Carolina University. “I’ve always enjoyed learning and always learn more from trying to teach others. Working in a daycare made me realize even more that I want to be around children while helping them grow and learn,” she says. “I value that HCC has small class sizes, is close to home and can provide an affordable education.”

Registration for fall semester is underway now through August 3 for both new and continuing students.
