Haywood Community College’s workforce continuing education department is offering a wide variety of courses for the month of August. There’s something for everyone, including courses that allow you to earn a credential to courses for the hobbyist.  

iPhone Photography will be held Tuesdays, July 31 through August 21, 6-8 p.m. Cost is $65. This class will teach participants how to use the iPhone as your only camera.

Beginning Floor Loom Weaving will be held Wednesdays, August 1 through August 29, 1-4 p.m. Cost is $190. Participants will leave this class with a sampler of structures and four napkins or two towels from color studies.

Beginning Weaving:  Rigid Heddle will be held Wednesdays, August 1 through August 29, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.  Cost is $138. Participants will weave at least one scarf or two towels or placemats during this class.

Introduction to Cold Process Soap Making will be held Saturday, August 4, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday, August 5, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost is $50. This workshop will cover Basic soap chemistry, safety precautions, equipment and the art of soap making.       

Notary Public will be held Saturday, August 4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $75 plus required textbook. This class will cover the qualifications, procedures and certifications for becoming a notary.  

Defensive Driving will be held Monday, August 6, 6-10 p.m. Cost is $75. This course keeps all drivers safe on the road.

OBD II Safety Inspection will be held Tuesday, August 7 and Thursday, August 9. Cost is $75. Students will learn all the skills necessary to design and construct an acoustic guitar. OBD II Emissions will be held Tuesday, August 21 and Thursday, August 23. Cost is $75. These courses are designed to prepare auto technicians and service personnel as OBD emission inspectors for motor vehicles.

Basic Knifemaking will be held Mondays, August 20 through September 24, 3-6 p.m. Cost is $225. In this class, students will forge, grind, heat treat and handle a basic fixed blade knife.

Upholstery will be held Mondays, August 20 through October 29, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. or 5-9 p.m. Cost is $175. This course provides hands on experience in tool use, various equipment and techniques of the upholstery profession.

Forging Axes will be held Mondays, August 20 through September 24, 6-9 p.m. Cost is $225. In this class, each student will forge a Kentucky style belt axe.

Quilting will be held Wednesdays, August 22 through October 24 as well as Fridays, August 24 through October 26 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $155. An evening course will run August 23 through October 25, 5-9 p.m. This project-based course is designed for individuals interested in learning the art of quilting.

Basic Blacksmithing will be held Wednesdays, August 22 through September 26, 3-6 p.m. Cost is $225. In this introductory level beginner course, students will focus on controlling the fire and establishing good forging habits as they work to gain familiarity with a variety of basic forging techniques.

Forging Jewelry will be held Fridays, August 24 through September 28, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost is $225. Students will use iron and traditional forging techniques to create one or more pieces of jewelry.

Forging Tools for Woodworkers will be held Fridays, August 24 through September 28, 1-4 p.m. Cost is $225. As an introductory project, each student will forge a marking knife from a piece of high carbon steel and heat treat it.     

In addition, HCC’s workforce continuing education department offers Community First Aid and CPR classes the third Tuesday of each month 6-10:00 p.m. HCC is Haywood County’s American Heart Association Training Center.
