Haywood Community College awarded a new scholarship for spring semester 2019. The David and Denise Matthys Scholarship benefits a full or part-time student that is a resident of Haywood County. The couple made Waynesville their permanent residence 10 years ago and started this scholarship as a way to help this area and its students.

“As a young farm kid in Texas in 1960, I was awarded a $50 merit scholarship to our local junior college and I truly believe that started me on my way to completing my own college education and resulting career,” David Matthys explains. “We simply wanted to provide some financial help to any person who wants to improve their lives through higher education or through learning a trade that will allow them to make a living in the future.”

After attending junior college, David spent time in the service and then received a degree from the University of Houston. He retired from a career as a certified public accountant.

“Education is really important to us,” Denise explains. “We want to encourage others.”

Currently helping their four grandchildren with college expenses and four more to go, the couple knows exactly how helpful a scholarship can be.
