Haywood Community College’s workforce continuing education department is offering a wide variety of courses for the month of April. There’s something for everyone, including courses that allow you to earn a credential to courses for the hobbyist.  

Defensive Driving will be held Monday, April 1, 6-10 p.m. An additional course will be offered Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $75. This course keeps all drivers safe on the road.

Basic Knife & Axe Making will be held Mondays, April 1 through May 20, 1-4 p.m. Cost is $225. Students will forge, grind, heat treat and handle a basic fixed blade knife or forge a Kentucky style belt axe.

OBD II Auto Safety Inspection will be held Tuesday, April 2 and Thursday, April 4. Cost is $75. OBD II Emissions/OBD will be held Tuesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 18. Cost is $75. These courses are designed to prepare auto technicians and service personnel as OBD emission inspectors for motor vehicles.

Art Quilts for the Natural Dyer will be held Tuesdays, April 2 through May 21, 5-8 p.m. Cost is $240. This workshop will teach participants how to achieve brilliant colors with natural dyes on cotton fabrics, explore surface design opportunities available to the natural dyer and delve into the art of quilting.

Notary Public will be held Saturday, April 6, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $75 plus required textbook. This course covers the qualifications, procedures and certification for becoming a notary.

Oversize Escort Vehicle Certification will be held Saturday, April 6. This course is designed to meet the training requirements set by the NC Department of Transportation to certify Oversize-Overweight load escort vehicle drivers.

ABS Folders will be held Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Cost is $617.25.  This course provides detailed instruction on the art and craft of fabrication of the slip joint folder.

Upholstery will be held Mondays, April 8 through June 10, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. or 5:30-9:30 p.m. Cost is $155. This course provides hands-on experience in tool use, various equipment and techniques of the upholstery profession.

String Class 1 will be held Mondays, April 8 through June 17, 5-6:30 p.m. Cost is $155. Students will need to buy a companion book “Essential Elements for Strings 1” by Hal Leonard Publishing and will also need to provide their own instrument.

String Class 2 will be held Mondays, April 8 through June 17. Cost is $155. Students will need to buy a companion book “Essential Elements for Strings 1” by Hal Leonard Publishing and will also need to provide their own instrument.

Guitar Class 1 will be held Tuesdays, April 9 through June 11, 5-6:30 p.m. Cost is $155. Students will need to buy a companion book “Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1” and will also need to provide their own instrument.

Guitar Class 2 will be held Tuesdays, April 9 through June 11, 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $155. Students will need to buy a companion book “Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1” and will also need to provide their own instrument.

Basic Blacksmithing will be held Wednesdays, April 10 through May 29, 6-9 p.m. Cost is $225. In this introductory level beginner course, students will focus on controlling the fire and establishing good forging habits as they work to gain familiarity with a variety of basic forging techniques.

Piano 1 will be held Wednesdays, April 10 through June 12, 5-6:30 p.m. Cost is $275. With an introduction to the keyboard through the study of notation, hand positions, chord formations, scales and sight-reading, students will learn to read and perform piano techniques through step-by-step teaching methods.

Piano 2 will be held Wednesdays, April 10 through June 12, 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $275. Piano Class II will continue to build on the physical and theoretical music skills learned in Piano Class I.

Forging Jewelry will be held Fridays, April 12 through May 24, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost is $225. Students will use iron and traditional forging techniques to create one or more pieces of jewelry.

Vocal Class will be held Thursdays, April 18 through June 20, 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $155. This class addresses functional techniques in singing for students seeking to develop vocal and musical abilities.

Build Your Own Loom will be held Mondays, April 22 through April 29, 9 am.-1 p.m. Cost is $95. In this class, you will be introduced to several types of basic looms and build one that you can take home.

Drawing:  Foundations will be held Fridays, April 26 through May 31, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Cost is $135. This course focuses on translating three dimensions to a two-dimensional surface.

Introduction to Painting:  Acrylics will be held Fridays, April 26 through May 31, 1-4 p.m. Cost is $135. In this course, students will learn the basics of painting with acrylic paints including topics of color theory, mixing and blending color and perspective.

Photographing the Mountains will be held Tuesdays, April 30 through May 21, 6-8 p.m. Cost is $65. Join us for a hands-on experience analyzing composition and determining exposure in a variety of locations and conditions.

In addition, HCC’s workforce continuing education department offers Community First Aid and CPR classes on the third Tuesday of each month 6-10:00 p.m. HCC is Haywood County’s American Heart Association Training Center.
