Haywood Community College will offer a new full tuition scholarship for nursing students. The Elizabeth “Betty” Rathbun Memorial Nursing Scholarship will benefit a full-time nursing student that has a minimum GPA of 3.5. This scholarship is established by Laurel Rathbun Hunt in memory of her mother.

Elizabeth “Betty” Rathbun studied nursing at the Ontario Hospital in Toronto, Canada. As a registered nurse, Rathbun practiced in a variety of hospital settings including pediatric, psychiatric, operating room, and as a private duty nurse. After marriage, motherhood and moving to Asheville, Rathbun maintained her nursing skills through volunteering for 30 years with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. In addition, she was instrumental in starting the Health Adventure in Asheville as a way for children to learn more about their health. Rathbun and her husband, Dr. Lewis Rathbun, also served on medical mission trips to foreign countries.

According to Hunt, “Nursing is a special calling. My mother was a caring and compassionate person who loved helping others and had life long memories of her patients. I am delighted to have the opportunity to provide this scholarship as part of her legacy.”
