New Tourism Program Coincides with Registration at Haywood Community College Now Open

Summer and Fall semester registration at Haywood Community College is now open. Whether it’s time to start your educational journey or pick up where you left off, HCC is here to support your needs to Shape Your New Future! Summer courses begin Monday, June 5 and fall courses start Monday, August 14.

With over 30 curricular programs in 9 different career clusters, students can pursue a certificate, diploma or associate degree at a fraction of the cost of a four-year school. Students can enjoy small class sizes which result in one-on-one attention.

HCC offers a variety of courses delivered in an array of methods to fit all schedules. From in-person to entirely online, the College has what students need to create a flexible schedule for those who are employed or may also be balancing a family, making it easy to get the credentials needed to move forward. Students will find options in fields directly aligned with career opportunities, including healthcare, manufacturing, natural resources, public safety, professional crafts and many others.

Starting in the fall 2023 term, HCC will be offering a new Tourism Certificate which is part of the already established Business Administration Associate Degree. Students will be able to complete their Associate Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in tourism or complete the Tourism Certificate. This new program was a request from our local community partners who work every day in careers related to the tourism industry. This program specifically focuses on boosting options for those working in tourism and hospitality roles to become managers and pursue other growth opportunities.

As part of this program, students can be matched with their current employer or other area employer to obtain work-based learning which is part of the certificate learning hours. The tourism industry spans many businesses such as restaurants, hotels, event spaces, special attractions, country clubs, and much more.

One of the local partners who served on the industry planning group is Will Jones, General Manager for the SWAG and Cataloochee Ranch. “I am excited and eager to assist in launching the Hospitality program at Haywood Community College” says Jones. “This program will be a great offering for HCC students currently working in the hospitality field as well as Haywood County residents looking for a new career path. This program will also serve as a great resource for local businesses by attracting future employees into the program. The hospitality field relies heavily on dedicated team members that serve from the heart. From what I know about HCC and the team there, I could not think of a better place to foster the next generation of hoteliers. I am honored to be able to partner with HCC and offer any assistance I can in making sure this program is a success.”

Don’t let cost be an obstacle. With a combination of funding sources, attending HCC could be at no cost. Through the generosity of donors, HCC has a variety of scholarship opportunities available to students.
