2025 Community Science Night
Community Science Night, Thursday, April 24, 2025 was a success at HCC
SciFest on the campus of HCC was a huge success! The campus welcomed over 85 children and their families to experience a wide range of science-related activities.
This team effort could not have been possible without all the wonderful volunteers, the support of the BioNetwork, and sponsorship from Pratt & Whitney.
Attendees were able to experience many stations from chemistry to eco-systems and fractals!
We hope everyone enjoyed the fun-filled evening and we can’t wait to see you all next year!
Every participant completed each station and bring their creations home.
- Tiny Terrariums: Create your own miniature terrarium while learning about plant growth requirements and the cycling of matter in ecosystems of all sizes.
- Can You Taste It?: Did you know your DNA can determine how you taste things? Join this genetics and data science combo experiment to determine if you can taste certain flavors and compare your data to other participants!
- Fractal Building: Menger Cube: Learn how a mathematics concept, the Menger Cube, unlocks new discoveries in biomedical engineering, machining, and computer science.
- The Microworld: Close your eyes and picture a microscope - is it in a lab? Does it have to be used only there? The answer might surprise you! Learn about different types of microscopes and the many jobs that use them.
- Become a Community Scientist: Collaborate with your community to collect data and learn about the plants, animals, and fungi on your campus and in your backyard. Use the iNaturalist app to record observations during SciFest and learn about other community science projects in North Carolina.
- Solar Critters: Learn about circuits and solar energy by making your own paper critter that will dance under the sun's power.
