EDU-119
Take this course as part of our degree program or on its own for your position at an early education facility. Our team is here to support you no matter your educational path.
This course is a requirement to work as a lead teacher in an early education facility which is licensed by the state of North Carolina and is recognized at any early education and childcare facility statewide. HCC’s course is available in both an 8-week and a 16 week time frame and offered fully online allowing students to take the class and earn their credential at a convenient time for them to keep a full-time position.
Important information for our students
- Each student will receive a New Student email from HCC with key dates providing an overview of when payments are due, class start date, and more. Students need to read over this email to ensure they are aware of important information related to the class.
- If your employer is paying for this class, be sure to provide them with the information to remit payment. This information will come to you via email and can be found on this webpage.
- Before class starts, be sure to check your haywood.edu email account and set up your student ID. For assistance with this, visit: https://www.haywood.edu/information-technology/newusers.php
- After class starts, ensure you complete the HOP assignment within the specified time frame and preferably on the day the course starts to ensure you are counted as present for the class and not inadvertently dropped from the class.
There are a variety of ways to ensure your class is paid for:
- T.E.A.C.H. Scholarships – contact them directly at 919-967-3272 or apply online at https://www.childcareservices.org/programs/teach-north-carolina/apply/

- Employer – Have your employer review the Employer section of this webpage for details.
Important Information for Employers
HCC is proud to offer the necessary education for your employees! Our online, 8-week and 16-week courses provide the opportunity for employees to easily take this class to qualify for an early childhood credential and to keep your facility in compliance. This enables you to provide the best care possible to your children and families.
There are a few key items to keep in mind to ensure your employees are registered, and remain registered, in this class:
- HCC gladly partners with Child Care Services Association to offer the TEACH scholarship for EDU-119 students. To ensure students receive this scholarship, please contact TEACH immediately and ensure that your employee has completed the application and that TEACH will notify HCC of the student’s eligibility for the scholarship.
- It is key that your office establishes the method of payment for your employees 10 days prior to the first day of class. If payment is not on file, students will be dropped from the class and will have to wait for the next class start date due to the number of students on the wait list.
- It is important that you remain up to date on any outstanding balances from prior terms so additional employees from your facility can be enrolled into our course.
- Remember that HCC offers a variety of additional programs for your employees:
- Infant and Toddler Care Certificate (online)
- Preschool Certificate (online)
- Early Childhood Administration Certificate (online)
- Early Childhood Career Option Degree (online)
- Early Childhood Birth to Kindergarten Licensure Transfer Degree (online)
- Early Childhood Transfer (Non-Licensure) Degree (online)
- Two Teacher Preparation Transfer Degrees (Associate in Science or Associate in Arts) are also available for students who wish to teach in a public-school setting.
When a student’s employer or other third party wishes to pay that student’s tuition and fees, or any portion thereof, the following options are available:
- In person at the Cashier’s Window, Hemlock Building (upper level). Cash, check, money order, and most major credit cards accepted.
- Online by having the student sign into Self Service and entering credit card information by clicking on “Make a Payment” under Student Finance. Please note that we do not accept credit cards over the phone in order to protect the cardholder’s financial security.
- By check or money order via USPS mail or by a delivery service (such as UPS or FedEx) sent to the following address:
Haywood Community College
Business Office, Attn: Cashier
185 Freedlander Drive
Clyde, NC 28721
Please do not send cash.
HCC will not accept starter checks, counter checks, or any check with an expiration date (e.g., credit card account checks). The College will not accept postdated checks.
Please make your check or money order payable to Haywood Community College for the exact amount due and include the student’s name to ensure proper credit.
- Third Party Sponsorship - HCC will invoice third parties in good financial standing if they request by completing and returning the Third-Party Sponsorship Form. This form must be received in the Business Office ten (10) days prior to the first day of class. The employer will be invoiced after the drop/add period and before the end of the term for which the request is made. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice.
The student may also purchase required textbooks and supplies on credit if indicated on the Third-Party Sponsorship Form. Credit will be available in the bookstore on the next business day after the form is received by the Business Office, and items purchased will be invoiced to the employer/third party as indicated above.
- This form may also be used by North Carolina employers to request in-state tuition rates for students who are designated as out of state by the Residency Determination Service (RDS). The student must be employed at a North Carolina location.
- The employer must pay using a company check, or the student will be rebilled at the out-of-state rate.
