Honey Bee Diseases, Pests and Treatments

This course is an advanced 6-week study for beekeepers who have previously completed the HCC Backyard Beekeeping course or, beekeepers who have their certification(s) from the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA). Prior knowledge about honeybees is required, as THIS IS NOT a beginner’s course! Subjects covered will include Apiary Management, Pests, Parasites, Pathogens, and Treatments. In addition, students will inspect and analyze bee colonies and file research reports.

COURSE EQUIPMENT
Students MUST have the following items to conduct proper apiary inspections.
1. Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
a. Bee Suit, Jacket - (sized accordingly).
b. Pants and shoes required for all students (no shorts, flip-flops, )
c. Protective Gloves –
i. Goatskin bee gloves (one pair, sized accordingly).
ii. Chemical Resistant Gloves – Nitrile Chemical Resistant Gloves, Reusable Heavy-Duty
d. Smoker
e. Stainless Steel Beehive Claw Scraper Beekeeping Tool
 
BE AWARE, this course IS NOT RECOMMENDED for people who have any “bee allergies.” Exposure to live honey bees is part of being a beekeeper, and stings are probable!
