Intermediate Basketry

handmade woven basket with small handles on the top in two shades of brown in a gardenInstructor: Debra Mills

Location: Sycamore Bldg., Room 7306

Take your basket weaving skills to the next level with Intermediate Basketry.  In this class you will build on the fundamentals you learned in Beginning Basketry.  In the first class you will participate in learning how to dye your own reed.   This reed will be used as accent materials for The Mountain Tote.  It is a patterned basket aprox 14” long x 12” high with handles.   We will continue with 2/2 twill on a  cat head base that creates a lovely spiral as it weaves up the sides of your basket.  The next basket is a traditional Appalachian egg basket aprox 10-12” in diameter.  It is sometimes called a Buttocks Basket.
Patterns and weaving materials will be provided.

Tools to bring: bucket or tub for soaking reeds, ruler or tape measure, cutting shears, pencil, awl or ice pick, towel and/or apron, spray bottle and utility knife for scraping rims.
